Space, The Final Frontier

January 12th, 2017

Truss UK is one of the few remaining British manufacturers of load- bearing aluminium trussing products; they design and manufacture structural aluminium products for the entertainment industry as well as other specialist industry sectors worldwide.

Having recently launched their new aluminium space frame product, Truss UK are pleased to announce that they have supplied the National Theatre (NT) with a large OBLIK system.

OBLIK is a modular space frame system consisting of only three main component types, the largest of weighing in at less than 16kg. The system is lightweight, compact for transport and storage and simple to erect using conventional fixings (nuts and bolts) to create complex aluminium structures that are extremely strong.

Truss UK director Paul Jordan says “The OBLIK space frame system was deployed in the grid of the NT’s Lyttelton theatre and is suspended from the underside of the existing infra structure of the building, fitted in the void between the grid and the roof.”

Paul Jordan adds “Each of the OBLIK frames measures fourteen (14) metres long by three (3) metres wide and weighs only 1,380kg, with all the members in the top and bottom plane of the structure having a load-bearing capacity. After installation each of the OBLIK frames were tested with 9.9 tonnes of live load and performed as it was intended.”

Steve Colley, Head of Automation and Rigging at the NT said “we chose OBLIK for the Lyttleton theatre as this system gives us the flexibility to rig new shows quickly, rigging directly from the OBLIK space frame without having to bridle from the roof structure or move grid stands and point hoists round on the grid for the show setup.”

Paul Jordan added “Rather than show loads being supported by the conventional theatre grid they are now supported fully by the roof structure with the space frame distributing and spreading the loads throughout the system and back to the whole building structure rather than imposing larger point loads on it.”

Truss UK director Tony Dickson said “OBLIK can be used for so much more than lightweight mother grids like at the NT. We also have decking and hand railing components to create suspended walkways, platforms, stages, lighting rigs, ground- supported roof systems and even high load columns.”

Tony Dickson adds “OBLIK has recently been used on the external façade of a building in a central Manchester to support a fourteen (14) metre x eight (8) metre video wall. Conventional steelwork support solutions would have imposed in excess of nine (9) tonnes of additional load to the external face of the building, the OBLIK system only imposed around three (3) tonnes of load, which was more acceptable to the checking engineer”.

ULC TT Nominated for Innovation Awards at PLASA 2011

September 7th, 2011

Hoist UK Limited have reached the final of this year’s Innovation Awards at PLASA 2011 for their unique ULC TT Universal Load Corner, offered through their sister company Truss UK Ltd

The PLASA Awards for Innovation recognises products which advance the industry by demonstrating a new style of thinking, improving technical practice, or taking a key step forward in terms of safety.

The load corner unit eliminates the need to try and support the truss either side of a conventional corner block or worse still suspend from it. The ULC TT Universal Load Corner which is an integral part of the TT series of truss is a structurally rated and certified six (6) way corner complete with a suspension and load point for up to 2,500kgs.

Paul Jordan, Designer of the Universal Load Corner says “The ULC TT shows that thinking outside the box on a new development actually works. Up to now truss manufacturers have produced corner units that only work as corners as generally they are not rated for load and subsequently don’t have load tables available for them. The ULC TT is load rated and hangs the truss from the most efficient position with its independently rotating eyes, eliminating any cantilever loads from the structure.”

“We are very proud to have reached the final of PLASA’s Innovations Awards 2011. Bringing new ideas to the entertainment industry form a vital part of development, and we believe that our TT series is the new concept in trussing…One Truss with Numerous Configurations”, adds Hoist UK’s Tony Dickson.

Truss UK will promote British engineering at its best with innovative product development for the entertainment industry offering “Quality at Every Stage”.

Hoist UK follows the Governments lead…

June 13th, 2011

Following the British Government’s lead; Hoist UK Limited hope to stimulate growth and employment in the UK economy by the launching of their sister company Truss UK Limited.

Truss UK will promote British engineering at its best with innovative product development for the entertainment industry offering “quality at every stage”.

One of the many innovative products in the forthcoming Truss UK catalogue that will be showcased at the ABTT trade show in London during June will be the TT range of trussing systems.

“The TT product is one of the most versatile trussing systems you would ever buy, therefore probably the only trussing system you will ever have to buy; offering the strength of medium duty truss in a compact configuration”, says Hoist UK’s Tony Dickson.

“The TT range of truss is unique in the fact that it can be used any way round in almost any configuration, with the new products designed in accordance with the very latest European code for aluminium structures, namely BS EN 1999-1-1” adds Hoist UK’s Paul Jordan

The TT truss has been designed and certified for use as a tower or as a beam truss with the end connection designed so the truss can articulate to allow the creation of horizontal and vertical shapes with the spigots vertical or horizontal without a reduction in overall strength of the components enabling the creation of intricate shapes or arches and circles using straight and standard lengths of truss.

Exclusively, the TT range offers the universal load corner (ULC-TT), which is a structurally rated and certified six (6) way corner complete with a suspension and load point for up to 2,500kgs. The compact design enables the unit to be individually flown from a chain hoist, winch or other piece of stage machinery or used on the top of a TT ground support tower.

For more information on the products and services offered by Truss UK, please contact us or visit our stand number 99 in the Lawrence Hall at the forthcoming ABTT trade show on June 15th / 16th at the Royal Horticultural Halls, London.
